I
get emails nearly everyday from people all over the world, asking
me for my healing assistance with their pet companions.
Q:
How do I heal my rescued abused companion?
A:
The first thing you need to heal an abused pet is a patient temperament
and oceans of unconditional love.
Make
your new companion feel needed and loved. Provide them with a healthy
diet. Give them ample time to get familiar to you, your family and
home, at their own pace. Never use force. Force reinforces abuse
patterns. Guard your new family member against whatever he fears.
Get professional help with a gentle animal trainer.* Communicate
clearly with your pet using simple commands. Speak quietly, lovingly,
softly.
Introducing
your new pet into situations where you arrange positive outcomes.
- Reward
him with a tasty treat, a few loving words, a pat on the head,
and a smile on your face.
- Build
your pets confidence through click-and-treat training.
- Make
certain your pet has enough exercise. Dogs need 20 to 30 minutes
of running, not walking, exercise every day. Cats need to release
energy in bursts. A tired pet is a good and happy pet!
- Do
everything possible to let your pet feel safe and secure. Give
them their private space, and keep it sacred for them. Protect
him from well-meaning strange people or other dogs that may terrify
him.
Your
new companion should be spoiled like a Child of God. Give him everything
he wants and needs unconditionally. Never make him work for food,
praise, toys or attention. Your pet deserves your complete and deepest
love always.
